7/14/2013 Justice for Trayvon Benjamin Martin![]() Everyone in the country is aware of the not guilty verdict in the George Zimmerman trial on the evening of July 13, 2013. So many hearts have been broken, lives turned upside down but none can compare to that of Sabrina Fulton and Tracy Martin. Not only have they lost their beloved son, Trayvon but they have also lost to the justice system as they fought to see that Zimmerman, the one that shot and killed their 17 year old son pay for his poor judgment and lack of compassion for a young man's life. The trial only proved as a 'good' show; one that not only placed Trayon....the teen that was murdered on trial, but also his close friend Rachel Jeantel. Not only was she put in a tough situation being called to testify, but she was hen crucified by the media and those that were supposed to be supporting her on behalf of Trayvon! Adults were just as cruel as youth when speaking so horribly about her! She didn't ask to be in that situation, and should have been supported by each and every one of us! Society, and those who behaved the way they did is the exact reason why our youth are in the positions they are today!
The controversy is not one of simply race, but also of what is right and wrong; what is just. Knowing that Zimmerman has walked away from this horrible tragedy without any accountability only confirms the already believed idea that the lives of minorities and those residing in low income communities are simply not as important as their counterparts. Aside from Trayvon, there have been many of our youth subjected to profiling and ultimately death. Police officers, civilians, gun violence and drugs within the communities are out of control. This insane, unfair sense of justice only leaves the door open for continued failure to protect our youth. As if adding salt to the wound, the attorney of Zimmerman is proudly announcing during an interview that Zimmerman will be getting his gun back; stating that, "He will need it now more than ever." He further informs the world that, "Zimmerman will possibly be filing for charges of his own." Really???????? What is even worse is the attorney states that Zimmerman "does not regret carrying the gun on February 26, 2012 the night Trayvon was killed." Now the conversation begins....the questions must be asked, and they must be followed by answers. Where do we all go from here? African American, Hispanic American, Asian American, Native Americans, White....poor, middle class, rich....Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Atheist....HUMAN BEINGS, what do we do moving forward? How do we make changes in this country, within the judicial system to better protect the well-being of our youth??? Trayvon Benjamin Martin (and so many others) lost his life due to the negligence of another human being; let this tragedy not have been in vain! Let's not join the ban wagon of concern for a week, a month, and then fall to the way side allowing yet another 'issue' to fly by. Let's not throw in the towel if the fight becomes 'too difficult' or seem to take 'too long'. If we cannot beat the system, then we must find a way around it! Our prayers will continue for the Fulton and Martin families; and may Trayvon R.I.P. Thank you TC Supporters! Mrs. Tomaro M. Pilgrim, MS Comments are closed.
